Vanguard vs TIAA

In the world of teacher retirement, two names stand above the rest: TIAA and Vanguard. Both claim to be mission-driven and non-profit oriented. But as we compare their offerings for 2026, the underlying structures reveal two very different philosophies. One is an insurance company with a teahouse-like heritage of complexity; the other is a client-owned mutual fund powerhouse built on simplicity.

The Structure of Vanguard

Vanguard is unique because the company is owned by its funds, and those funds are owned by their investors (you). This means there are no outside owners or stockholders to satisfy. Their sole mission is to lower costs for the people who use them. This manifests in the lowest average expense ratios in the industry.

In contrast, TIAA is a non-profit insurance company, but it still maintains a complex corporate structure with high-paid executives and significant overhead related to its insurance-based products. While TIAA "gives back" some earnings to participants, it doesn't have the same structural imperative to lower costs that Vanguard does.

Target Date Fund Comparison

Vanguard’s Target Retirement funds are world-class. They use four simple index funds to manage your entire lifecycle. The fees are exceptionally low (around 0.08%). TIAA’s Lifecycle funds are also good, but they often use "active" management inside the funds, leading to higher fees (around 0.40%). Over a career, this 0.32% gap can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in difference in your final balance.

The Verdict

If you have access to a Vanguard 403(b) through your employer, it is almost always the superior choice for your stock and bond allocations. TIAA should only be used if you specifically want the insurance guarantees of TIAA Traditional. For everything else, Vanguard's "ownership" model provides a tailwind that TIAA simply cannot match.
